Griegu uguns.jpg

Grieķu uguns (an. Greek fire, vc. Griechisches Feuer, kr. греческий огонь) - Bizantijas impērijā VII-X gs. kara flotē izmantots aizdedzinošs maisījums pretinieka kuģu aizdedzināšanai jūras kaujas laikā, īpaši efektīvs tāpēc, ka liesmas nevarēja nodzēst ar ūdeni. Maisījums it kā ticis uzglabāts stacionārā vara katlā uz kuģa klāja, bet aizdedzinātā maisījuma strūkla no vara sifona tēmētas uz pretinieka kuģi (darbības attālums nav zināms, pēc mūsdienu aplēsēm tas varētu būt 20-30 m). Pirmo reizi tiek pieminēta 664. gadā (Teofans izmanto Aleksandrijas ēru, kurā laika skaitīšana sākas ar pasaules radīšanu 5501. gadā, t.i. apraksta 673. gada notikumus) Teofana Grēku atlaidēja (gr. Θεοφάνης Ομολογητής, Theophanes Homologetes, 760.-818.) hronikā, minot, ka to izgudrojis Kaliniks (Καλλινικός) no Sīrijas Heliopoles (Ἡλιουπόλεως, mūsd. Bālbeka Libānā). Par "grieķu uguni" to dēvēja svešzemnieki, bet paši bizantieši to min kā "jūras uguni" (πῦρ θαλάσσιον, pyr thalassion) vai "slapjo uguni" (πῦρ ὕγρον, pyr hygron), dažkārt arī "spožo uguni" (πῦρ λαμπρόν, pyr lampron). Recepte, ražošana un mehānisms tika glabāti stingrā noslēpumā, to zināja visai nedaudzi cilvēki, līdz ar to XI gs. maisījuma recepte bija zudusi (kaut jau laikabiedri mēģināja aprakstīt sastāvu, taču rekonstruēt maisījumu un mehānismu, par pamatu ņemot šos aprakstus, nav izdevies) un par tā izgatavošanu un pielietošanu ziņu nav. Vēlākos viduslaiku avotos par "grieķu uguni" dēvēja jebkādu aizdedzinošu maisījumu.
